Week 6 high school football preview

Week 6 of the high school football season is one which may be one of the best of the year. Region play is beginning for most schools.

Last week was a good week for Goose Creek. They had their toughest game of the season, going to Dutch Fork and winning by 11. Berkeley had a big bounce-back win, but they only won by 1 over Timberland even though they had NINE turnovers!

Last night, Colleton County and Cane Bay played a great game. The Cougars went out to a 21-0 lead, but Cane Bay got a quick TD before halftime. Colleton County tired out, allowing two more TDs, leading up to a last-minute drive for the Cobras. This video shows the final drive for Cane Bay, which was a crusher for Colleton County, now on a 29 game losing streak:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T1eAh-ATh8&feature=plcp

I went to part of the Fort Dorchester-Wando game and it was a crazy scene. 7,000 fans for homecoming, with Wando students probably only consisting of maybe 1/5 of the crowd. A great game. Wando had sloppy defense in the second half which allowed Fort Dorchester to pull it close. They should have won, but had a penalty at the end for an ineligible man downfield.

Wando had never been 6-0, but their win Friday gave them that distinction. Summerville bounced back with a big win over West Ashley; Stratford blew out Colleton County who plays Thursday night against Cane Bay.

This week will be an interesting one. Here are my top 5 games:

5) West Ashley at Fort Dorchester. Fort Dorchester looks to bounce back from their very tough loss in Mt. Pleasant, a game that they were down 32-14 heading into the 4th quarter and nearly pulled out. They get West Ashley, a team who lost its QB in the preseason and has barely been competitive, sadly, with the only win a 8-6 triumph against Colleton County. Fort Dorchester should bounce back here.

4) West Florence at Ashley Ridge: A big battle for Ashley Ridge, playing the rare team from the Pee Dee that is traveling to the Lowcountry. Ashley Ridge is 1-4. They need a win to have a good chance at a winning record, a big comedown from last year as they lost their big seniors.

They close at Colleton County, host Bluffton, go to Beaufort, then host Summerville and go to Ashley Ridge. West Florence is 4-1, winning at Darlington and Wilson, with their only loss to a potent Myrtle Beach team. The theme at Ashley Ridge for this week is "swamp people." Will the SWAMP Foxes follow up?

3) James Island at Berkeley: Slickersville in Moncks Corner will be rocking after last week's win. Berkeley and James Island get back to their long lasting rivalry after a 2-year break. In 2009, the two played maybe one of the best games in the last decade of HS football at James Island. Berkeley was #1 in the state, with Bruce Ellington as the QB. James Island was very close most of the game, taking a lead with :90 left, and their fans were ready to storm the field.

Ellington, however, picked up a fumbled snap on the last play of the game and ran it in for about a 20 yard TD. Berkeley barely made the XP by inches, and won 34-33. The two teams look to top the action in this year's matchup. This will be a good football game to watch with these two schools who have something to prove.

2) Orangeburg-Wilkinson at Hanahan. Another 3A battle as this region starts up. OW has something to prove. They haven't played in a Lowcountry region since 2007 in 4A, so they are trying to be a surprise. They are 3-2 on the year, with a win over 4A Lower Richland. Hanahan is 4-1, with the only loss at Timberland.

This game will mean a lot in the Region 8-3A race, just like Berkeley and JI. Winners this week will have a leg up on the rest of the region.

1) Stratford at Summerville. Is this a surprise? Stratford has been down the last few years, but Ray Stackley has them back up. This rivalry has usually been the biggest in the area. In 1999 on a Monday night after Hurricane Floyd, Stratford drew 7,000 for an upset OT win that eventually led to their last state title.

This year, Stratford is 5-0, having gone through their opponents mostly in dominating fashion. Young Summerville is 2-3 after defeating West Ashley last week. McKissick needs four wins for 600. As I said in last week's post, it will be tough. Summerville's young QB, Sawyer Bridges is developing. Stratford, other than Goose Creek, is probably the Green Wave's toughest opponent though.

It will be an interesting game.

Support your teams!

Falcons DE Abraham arrested

Former South Carolina Gamecocks DE John Abraham has been arrested in Atlanta tonight.

From Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.
John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.
Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.
Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.
Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

CofC changing conferences (will discuss next BOT meeting)

The College of Charleston Board of Trustees, specifically their athletic committee, are having a meeting today to discuss conference affiliation, moving from the Southern Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association.

Just now: 4:02pm- Per Dwight Johnson: meeting adjourned, they will discuss at next BOT meeting.

The next meeting is October 19.

CofC would make the move on July 1 2013 to the CAA if they make the move. .

The meeting is going on at Randolph Hall on the College of Charleston campus. BOT deliberating on move to now. Sounds like AD and prez want to leave . Some members question move.

From Andrew Miller at the Post and Courier, who is at the meeting: CofC AD Joe Hull: 'Most athletes CofC recruits don't like SoCon. Hurts in all sports but baseball.'

AD Joe Hull trashing on way out door: "Invisible, hurts recruiting, makes it hard to attract games."

@mocsbeatCTFP: Is there anyone who doesn't think is headed to the CAA? It has seemed pretty obvious for months.

Athletic Committee chairman Dwight Johnson say it is 'not just an athletic decision' to move to CAA. Hull says that the SoCon also costs him more athletes than they gain.

CofC will be at the bottom of the CAA as far as budget for basketball. Johnson: 'Majority of coaches of CofC support move to CAA." "The move to CAA would cost school $580,000 more in travel and $20,000 more in annual conference fee."

CofC has fourth highest athletic budget in SoCon when you take out football and scholarship at private schools.

Hull says: 'Basketball head coach's salary is above average when compared to rest of CAA.' 50 national TV games in CAA. SoCon has 4 national TV games. "SoCon basketball is nearly invisible on national stage.'

This meeting is still going on. Some people are against the move, like former Cougar radio announcer Tony Ciuffo.  : going to kill CofC's chances at baseball at-large bid. Wonder why kids will not play baseball at CofC. What kid wants to bus around the SE and NE, miss tons of class and stay in 2nd rate hotels, which is how CofC travels. I wouldn't let my son attend CofC because facilities are terrible and Hull cant improve them. SoCon much better than CAA (from a baseball perspective).

Ciuffo's son, Nick, is a nationally-ranked baseball player from Lexington, SC.

John Reynolds, a former Citadel basketball player, says: @J4Reynolds: Good riddance. @AustinBAtkinson: This may be the most awkward moment in CofC athletics since the Gregg Marshall flip-flop.

Cost of travel and academics seem to have other committee members worried about this move, says @KevinLive5.

Week 5 high school football preview

We are into our sixth week of high school football in the Lowcountry, if you can believe it. For most schools in our area, they have already figured out what their season will be like or will very soon. For many smaller schools in the area, half the season is already over.

Last week was a week with some exciting games. Summerville lost to Wando at home in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated. Goose Creek won big over Fort Dorchester. That game was close into the 2nd quarter, but just like what they have done to most schools in the state, they pulled away.

Bluffton had a statement win against James Island. The score was 50-10 but all ten of the points JI had were on either special teams or defense. JI has a rare off-week this week as they hit the half-way mark at 2-3.

Berkeley. What has this school gone to under Jeff Cruce? Losing 18-7 at home to Manning? Not good for them. Hanahan also had a big win over Edisto.

This week has several interesting games. There is no Thursday game this week because the Panthers are playing Thursday night.

5) Goose Creek at Dutch Fork: First, we go to the Midlands. Goose Creek coming into Columbia for this game might be one of the biggest games of the year there. 107.5 the Game is airing the game live. Dutch Fork is 2-2: having beaten Fort Mill and Rock Hill and losing by one to St. X of Louisville. Goose Creek is just too good. They have too much talent on both sides of the ball. DF might make it close in the first half and maybe the third quarter, but the Gators will pull away.

4) Woodland at Academic Magnet: Woodland has opened up a lot of eyes this year. They are 3-1, with a win over 4A Colleton County. They also went to Barnwell (not an easy place to win) and defeated the War Horses 33-8. Academic Magnet has stud RB Stuart Walters. They are 3-1, but their loss was a region loss to Bishop England 42-0.

Magnet is looking to become the winningest team in school history; a win here would certainly help that mark. It will be tough though. Woodland has a good team. Look for this to be a competitive game in western Dorchester County.

3) Carolina Forest at Beaufort. This will be an intriguing game. Carolina Forest comes down from the Grand Strand, but Beaufort looks to bounce back after a tough loss against Cane Bay.

2) Ashley Ridge at Cane Bay. A very good game between these two schools in a rivalry which has developed quickly. Both schools started the same year, and played each other even when they were small schools. Now, this is a very important game for both teams. Cane Bay has become one of the best teams in the area with a win over Summerville, one over Beaufort and a win over Berkeley.

They haven't lost a home game since 2010 (disclaimer, one of my nephews, Jeremy is a senior there this year). Ashley Ridge is 1-3, having lost to Wando, Stratford and Goose Creek. This will be a very competitive game. Look for it to go down to the last possession.

1) Fort Dorchester at Wando. This game shares game of the week honors with AR-Cane Bay, and this will be a dandy. Wando is 5-0, in their last game before the four-game gauntlet of region play (West Ashley, Stratford, Goose Creek, and Cane Bay).

QB Christian Hart has become probably the second-best pure passer in the Lowcountry behind Jacob Park at Stratford. He has a lot of weapons on both sides of the ball too, with TE Taylor Kimball one of the team's leaders.

Wando also has one of the best FG kickers in the state, Casey Clawson. Fort Dorchester is 2-2, but their record doesn't show it. They had a close loss to Stratford and got blown out by Goose Creek. They are a young team as I said last week, but they will be primed and ready for this one.

Those are just some of the game which will be interesting to watch tonight. Please support your team!

Charlotte football player in serious condition

Charlotte student Justin Bolus, who is a freshman from James Island HS in Charleston, has undergone and will undergo multiple surgeries due to an infection from a rupture in his lower digestive system. This infection has made him REALLY sick and he remains in serious condition at the hospital.

Update on Bolus from one of his close friends on James Island (9/20 at 9:37am): Got text from Kathy (his mom) saying he came through surgery great! They are getting him off of the ventilator today. He will still be in ICU overnight. He will be in MUSC for several more weeks but right now things are looking up.They are requesting that anyone who wants to visit (except Ashlie) to please wait until tomorrow or this weekend. He will still be in the hospital for several more weeks but things are looking up. Thanks for all of the prayers that were sent for Justin, his family and his medical team. Please continue to pray for a full and complete recovery.

He has been in a Columbia hospital for most of two weeks. Last night he had his 2nd surgery. He is now at MUSC in Charleston.

He is a chemistry major there. He was one of the top players in the Lowcountry in 2010 and 2011 at James Island, before suffering a broken right wrist ending his season after six games last year.

Here is more info from David Scott of the Charlotte Observer (news story posted at 6:35pm 9/20): They are non-football related, according to a 49ers news release.

Bolus's condition is improving and he is expected to rejoin the team in the spring.

“With Justin, football is the farthest thing from our minds right now,” said 49ers coach Brad Lambert in a statement. “Our focus is on his well-being and getting him better. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Lambert visited Bolus on Wednesday.

"In speaking with his mother this morning, we understand that he is improving -- and that is great news,” said Lambert.

Dabo Swinney makes a ruckus during traffic stop

FITSnews is reporting that Clemson coach Dabo Swinney made a ruckus during a traffic stop on September 3. He was heading to his radio show at a Bi-Lo.

“Typically in that situation I would react in a different way, but being that it was him I didn’t feel threatened by him but I guess I was a little more (lenient) because of knowing who he was,” McClatchy wrote.
Swinney and a man who identified himself as the coach’s brother then approached Corporal McClatchy and explained that the coach was running late for his scheduled radio show at the supermarket.

The two also reportedly made it clear that this just wasn’t a good time for him to receive a speeding ticket.
Told several times to return to their vehicle, Swinney and his brother allegedly refused – and began “socializing and signing autographs for fans” in the Bi-Lo parking lot.  While writing up Swinney’s ticket, McClatchy says he was informed by a store manager that a local city official was on the phone asking to speak with him – presumably to talk him out of writing Swinney a ticket.

John L. Smith rumors on being fired?

Contact close to Arkansas AD says that reports on letting John L Smith go are not true. Saturday Down South is reporting this after the worst loss in Arkansas history, 52-0 on national TV to Alabama at home.

There is a lot of Northwest Arkansas murmuring right now that John L Smith has either resigned or been let go. John L. Smith after Alabama game: "I really don’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to say to our team as well."

@Hogtrough reported: Rumor alert: John L Smith has stepped down as Arkansas' HC.

Matt Schick reports ESPN cam saw Nebraska team doctor checking Bo Pelini's pulse on the sideline. Had to sit down earlier.

ESPN2 reports that Bo Pelini has left the stadium in an ambulance. Nebraska is currently up 28-10 on Arkansas State.

Sean_Callahan says on Twitter: Apparent flu like symptoms. He was getting his heart rate checked in the 2nd quarter. Stressful week here in Lincoln.

Week 4 high school football preview

Hard to believe that we are already to the fourth week of high school football for most teams in the Charleston area. James Island, along with a couple other schools, will be playing their 5th game of the year Friday night. JI will be halfway through their regular season, amazingly.

You know the season is getting into it when Byrnes Fan 74 posts his first playoff projections for 4A on Palmetto Football Talk.

Last week was a week which was more of the same. Goose Creek blew out a foe, this time hated Summerville in front of a sell-out crowd at Goose Creek. Bishop England tore through Porter-Gaud, a team some picked to upset BE, 47-14 in front of the TV cameras of Thursday night lights.

Berkeley lost again, this time to Cane Bay. Berkeley is 0-3 now, with a thought of no end in sight for losing. However, they do not play any more 4A teams for the rest of the season, so that will help them.

James Island had a tough loss against Georgetown 14-8, to fall to 2-2, and now has to face one of the better teams in the lower part of SC, Bluffton.

This week's games will be ones to watch. Here is my top 5:

5) Cane Bay at Beaufort. These two schools couldn't be much closer on the field. On Doodles' Doodles, this is a toss-up game, which rarely happens. Cane Bay is 2-1 with big wins over Summerville and Berkeley and an OT loss to Fort Dorchester. Beaufort played horribly in the first game against Wando, but bounced back nicely, allowing just 13 points in the two wins against Aiken and Groves from Savannah.

This game will be a very interesting one to watch, as these schools have never faced each other, and look to begin a new rivalry.

4) Academic Magnet @ Bishop England. If you had this game marked on your best game list at the beginning of the year, you were crazy. Magnet has their best record after 3 games ever (3-0), and a legit chance at a winning record.

They have to go to Bishop England though, one of the toughest places in the area to play. BE has playmakers on offense and defense, and is imposing for almost any opposition.

3) Wando at Summerville (Thursday). Summerville was just beaten up last night by Wando. The score was 24-14, but it could have been a lot worse. Wando left at least 3 TDs on the field, and Summerville did not play good. They had a personal foul on a botched Wando punt which cost them about 40 yards and 5 minutes, and their DBs were leaving some of Wando's WRs more open than a bag of potato chips after it was eaten.

It will be tougher for McKissick, now 1-3 on the year, to get the five wins needed to get 600. The remaining schedule is @ West Ashley, Stratford, Fort Dorchester, @ Beaufort, Colleton County, @ Ashley Ridge, and Bluffton. The Green Wave are a very young team, with a 14 year old QB in Sawyer Bridges. He will grow up through the rest of this season.

2) Stratford @ Ashley Ridge. Stratford looks to be back to its old snarky self, with Coach Ray Stackley and QB Jacob Park. Stratford is undefeated. Last week was a tough win against Fort Dorchester, 28-21, but they have already shut out Berkeley and had a big win over Sumter.

Ashley Ridge got off the snide last week going to West Ashley and winning. West Ashley looks to be a little down after losing its starting QB. Ashley Ridge is a dangerous team, and in the competitive world of high school football in the Lowcountry, any 4A team can beat any other any game. Their fans will be amped up this week.

1) Goose Creek @ Fort Dorchester. We have seen the rise of Goose Creek football right before our eyes. It is hard to believe that in a 3 year period from 2000-2002, the program only won four games. Now, it is challenging to be one of the best programs in the Southeast. Last week's game against Summerville showed us that.

The Gators were up two TDs at halftime and Summerville made it a game. But in the second half, the game was over two-thirds of the way through the 3rd when GC made it 35-7 with two easy TD drives. Fort Dorchester will be eager to showcase their new scoreboard with their young team.

Goose Creek, just like what Summerville and Stratford were in the 1990s and early 2000s, has become the showcase opponent for most schools in the area. The Patriots will be amped up for this game, and could make it close.

There are several other interesting games, including Colleton County and West Ashley, a real chance for Colleton to break their long losing streak which dates to when I was a senior in HS (2009). Stall plays Military Magnet, and Porter-Gaud hosts Orangeburg Prep hoping to bounce back from last week.

Those are just some of the games on this weekend of HS football. Please support your school.

Notre Dame to the ACC

Per Brett McMurphy of ESPN, Notre Dame will join ACC as full member w/exception of football. ND will play 5 football games annually vs. ACC.

Notre Dame will join ACC as soon as it exits Big East. BE requires 27 months notice, but Irish could negotiate earlier exit.

Brian Hamilton of Chicago Tribune says: to announce it will join ACC today for all sports but football and hockey, multiple sources confirm to the Tribune.

The ACC will have to find a 16th school for basketball and other sports.

Jerry Lawler suffers heart attack, will have surgery

Jerry Lawler, the well-known wrestling commentator and jack of all trades, suffered a heart attack at the live WWE Raw at the Bell Centre in Montreal Monday night. He collapsed at his announcing table. He is at the hospital.

WMC in Memphis is reporting he will have heart surgery.

From Arda Ocal: multiple sources backstage at RAW that EMTs saved Lawler's life before going to Hospital. Confirmed to be a Heart Attack. Another source says Lawler was "clinically dead" for 20 minutes.

WWE statement from today: "Jerry "The King" Lawler suffered a heart attack while commentating during last night's broadcast of Monday Night Raw in Montreal. We are hopeful Jerry makes a full recovery and returns to WWE in the near future. Our thoughts are with Jerry and his family."

From WWEZone.com: According to sources, Lawler had flown to Montreal after working weekend independent shots in Aruba, so he had a long day of travel before working TV tonight. Whether that was a factor remains to be seen. A ringside fan emailed PWInsider.com to report that Lawler sounded as if he began snoring right before he collapsed. Prior to that, he communicated with a ringside employee, possibly to warn them something was wrong. EMTs were on the scene immediately, as were WWE medical personnel.

@SeanGrandePBP on Twitter reported this at 10:55pm. Cole on Lawler: We're being told he's more responsive. He is reacting to the lights in his eyes. He's in the ER awaiting a CAT scan"

@jim_utter, NASCAR reporter, posted: Jerry Lawler condition has stabilized. Heart beating on its own. Going to to have CT scans

What WWE says about this: http://www.wwe.com/shows/raw/2012-09-10/jerry-lawler-collapses-at-announce-table-26051089

Per Michael Cole on the broadcast. RT : Jerry Lawler breathing on his own now, at the hospital. He is also receiving oxygen

Still a serious situation.

Arda Ocal, a Montreal TV reporter, just happened to take a photo of him when the heart attack began.

From @pinkranger0120 who found this picture from there.

Confirmed. WWE just tweeted: BREAKING: on : collapsed at announce desk, is receiving CPR, medical attention at Centre Bell.

Earlier in the live episode, Lawler participated in and won a tag team match alongside Randy Orton. He's 62 years old, remember.

No commentary on Raw because of this. @bryanalvarez says: Mass confusion at Raw with everybody trying to figure out what to do. Lawler being given CPR backstage after collapsing. Hope he's all right.

Michael Cole on Raw says Lawler receiving CPR in the back of the arena. Not a part of the show. Same thing he said when Owen Hart died in 1999. He was addressing the fans.

Mike Mooneyham, wrestling columnist at the Post and Courier in SC, says: thoughts and prayers out for Jerry Lawler ... apparently suffered some sort of seizure at the announce table during Raw.

The wrestling is still going on there in this live event. This is an image of him from @ChristianFnCage on Twitter, who is there. https://twitter.com/ChristianFnCage/status/245342855558737921/photo/1

@mpfirm on Twitter just reported: Marinaro I'm 3rd row ringside. About 25 ft from Jerry Lawler. He grabbed his arm & collapsed. Carried away. His face was blue

Tony Stark, a local Montreal radio personality just reported: Just heard from source backstage...Jerry Lawler passed out backstage...Vince McMahon with him...EMT's working on him

He passed out while he was at the announcer's table. He is 62 years old, and was still wrestling very recently.

Medical staff ripped his heart open. The crowd was chanting "Lawler" during the commercial break.

RyanClarkWZR says: Lawler is gone from the booth ... he had his head down ... didn't look good. Possibly overheated or fainted?

Eyewitness report from prowrestling.net: The Score's Arda Ocal attended Raw in person and wrote the following on his Twitter page. "Something is going on with Jerry Lawler right now at the commentary table. It looks like he collapsed. Not part of show...

"He is being carried away by personnel to the backstage area. He appeared unconscious as he was being carried... When I looked over he was hunched over convulsing in his seat and collapsed, then multiple people carried him out."

Not only did Arkansas lose to Louisiana-Monroe tonight; now they have lost their QB Tyler Wilson for 3-4 weeks.

CBS Sports Network just reported Tyler Wilson has broken collarbone and out 3-4 weeks. Report is inaccurate, they apologized.

CBS is reporting this because they have their College Football Confidential series. A bad night for the Razorback football team has just gotten worse. Will the coach be next?

Duke player in scandal

Lawsuit is alleged that a starter on Duke's team in 2010 who started is alleged to purchase $100,000 in custom jewelry.

Lance Thomas is the one who is alleged to buy the jewelry. He started almost every game in the 2009-10 season for Duke.

More info: http://www.wralsportsfan.com/college_basketball/story/11519144/

From the article: Mike Bowers, the firm's attorney, said Thomas purchased a black diamond necklace, a diamond-encrusted watch, a pair of diamond studs, a diamond cross and a black diamond pendant in the shape of Jesus' head. Top Lowcountry games of Week 3

Hard to believe, but we are already on our fourth week of the high school football season. Most teams will be playing their 3rd game of the season this week, but a few (James Island and Wando included) will be playing their 4th.

This season so far has been exciting. Last week's games were pretty good, with James Island and Wando having statement wins (James Island over their big rival West Ashley, Wando over Ashley Ridge) Summerville also came back to their winning ways, beating up Berkeley 36-12. If the Stags don't get it together this week, there will be some problems in Moncks Corner.

In my game of the week Fort D beat Cane Bay in OT. Hanahan defeated Bishop England and Stratford is coming back to it's late 1990s ways, soundly defeating Sumter.

This week is one of the better weeks of the season so far. There are several interesting games, especially in 4A.

5) Berkeley at Cane Bay: After two years as a region game, Cane Bay moves into 4A, making this a non-region game. This game is still very important. Cane Bay hasn't lost a home game since 2010, and Berkeley coach Jeff Cruce is beginning to get naysayers for his team's poor play, losing 36-12 to Summerville last week

4) Fort Dorchester at Stratford. You know it's a good week if this is the 4th most important game of the week. You have 2 great teams, both 2-0 with good wins and interesting stories. This is Channel 4's game of the week, and will be very interesting. Look for this to be a very good one.

3) Ashley Ridge at West Ashley. A must-win game for both teams. Both are 0-2, and weren't expected to be that. Ashley Ridge is the favorite in this game, but it is a very important one. The loser of this game will be in a big hole for a chance at a winning record, even though it is early.

2) Summerville at Goose Creek. Any time these two football titans play, it is a big game. Goose Creek is a big favorite, but Goose Creek will be sold out for this game. Summerville is a very young team, who looked good last week, but as Brendan Clark said in Thursday's newspaper, this is Goose Creek.

1) Porter-Gaud at Bishop England. A good one tonight (Thursday) on Daniel Island. These two bitter rivals (the two largest private schools in the area), haven't played in the last five years because of stuff that happened between the two schools at a basketball game. Bishop England had a tough loss against Hanahan last week, but they look to bounce back this week in a big way. Porter-Gaud will be ready too for this televised game.

James Island at Georgetown is a big game too, and so is Colleton County at Wando for Wando, who looks to go 4-0. Also, First Baptist goes to James Island Christian in the first game between two James Island rivals in the regular season since James Island and Fort Johnson split.

This will be a great weekend. Enjoy the games!

Art Modell dies in Baltimore

Prayers for former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell. He Islas died in a Baltimore hospital.

Mike Cairns of WEWS was the first to mention it.

According to WKYC in Cleveland:

Former Browns owner Art Modell is in a Baltimore area hospital where his condition is worsening.
Family members, including his sons John and David, are gathered with the 87-year old Modell at the hospital.
Channel 3 sports has learned Modell's vital organs are failing.

No matter your thoughts about him, this is sad news.

The Citadel releases basketball schedule

The Citadel Bulldogs have released their basketball schedule. It is an interesting one, peppered with a wide variety of games.

Here's the schedule:  http://www.citadelsports.com/sports/mbkb/2012-13/schedule

They have a five-game home stand at the beginning of the season. They open Saturday, November 10 in the All-Military Classic against VMI.

Army and Air Force will also be in the tournament. They have two non-D1 home games, Montreat College on Nov. 14 and Union (KY) on Nov. 17.

The Bulldogs do not have a home game in the month of December. They play the College of Charleston twice in a 10-day span, Monday, January 14 at McAlister Field House and Thursday, January 24 at TD Arena.

Best home game: Probably Davidson Feb. 16, the conference's NCAA representative last season.

It will be an interesting season for the Bulldogs.

CofC releases men's basketball schedule

The College of Charleston men's basketball team has released their schedule for the season.

It is a very interesting schedule. They have 18 home games, plus an exhibition for a 19th home game.

They start the season with an exhibition Nov. 3 against USC-Aiken, then have their home opener Nov. 9 against Towson.

On December 4, the Cougs host Louisville in a 9pm ESPNU game.

Most of their home games are either 4pm or 7:30pm starts, except for the Coastal Carolina game on December 22, which starts at Noon and the game against Anderson University on Dec. 13 that starts at 7pm.

The Cougs also play in the Charleston Classic this year. They play St. John's on Thursday, November 15 to start that. Conference play starts at Elon on December 1, a team that the Cougs lost to last year in two OTs.
