In the Charleston area, televised high school football has become a growing moneymaker over the past few seasons. Beginning in 2010, WMMP (Channel 36) started carrying games on Thursday nights. Generally, in the first couple of seasons of the package, smaller schools were carried, but over the past couple of seasons, larger schools began to participate. Being the only game in town helped to provide buzz for the schools involved.
This year, however, it is a new frontier. Partially due to Thursday night NFL moving to CBS, WMMP will now show games on Friday nights. Last year, the last game of the season between Ashley Ridge and Fort Dorchester was televised on Friday. Now, on ten Fridays a game will be televised for those who are unable to go to a game or for those who want to see their favorite school play.
Here is the schedule:
08/22 Hanahan vs. James Island
08/29 Colleton County vs. Beaufort
09/12 Bishop England vs. Porter Gaud
09/19 Fort Dorchester vs. Goose Creek
09/26 Timberland vs. Berkeley
10/03 Summerville vs. Stratford
10/10 West Ashley vs. Wando
10/17 St Johns vs. Burke
10/31 Ashley Ridge vs. Summerville
11/07 James Island vs. Wando
Wando and James Island will each be featured twice on the package. Darren Goldwater will announce the games with Nate Ross.
This is part of a series of posts getting you ready for the season.
